had a late lunch at the arden way store in sacramento, ca. today. as we
were finishing our last few bites, the manager started to hatefully tell
me to GET THAT DOG UNDER THE TABLE. i have a service animal and the
table left no room for him at all. so, being a paralegal and a service
dog/ ADA advocate, i knew where to sit
and put him in a corner, out of the way of any traffic. no one else was
sitting near us anyway. the dog was standing up at the moment she
decided to DEMAND he be put under the table, as he was giving me a
warning (he's a medical alert dog). i didn't understand what she said,
asked her again, this time she was across the store so she shouted it.
EVERYONE stared at us, it was embarrassing and humiliating and drew
unwanted attention to the fact that i have a disability. we immediately
gathered our things and went to pay out. i handed her a card with the
law and she arrogantly stated: "i'm sorry, but i have MY laws." HUH???
SO SHE CAN JUST MAKE UP HER OWN LAWS and ignore the ADA and california
service dog laws because she wants to? i told her she embarrassed me and
she said "I DID NOT!" oh really? so now you can read my mind as well?
i will be filing a complaint on monday. i knew this store was going to be trouble as they have a sign posted that says SERVICE DOGS WELCOME. in my legal experience, only businesses that have been in trouble with the dept of justice have to post that sign. this ain't my first rodeo. thanks so much tina, for ruining what was a wonderful day before you arrived.
she could have quietly asked why the dog was standing and not act like she was the creator of all ADA laws and above the law at that. i told her he was giving me a warning and she still yammered on and on and on and on, raising her voice about how she didn't care, that SHE HAD HER OWN LAWS. must be nice in tinaland...
